The Third Separate Assault Brigade of the Armed Forces of Ukraine has officially been restructured into the Third Army Corps, as announced by the brigade’s current commander, Andrii Biletskyi.
Biletskyi emphasized that over the past three years, the brigade has been adopting new technologies, changing its approach to personnel training, and establishing one of the best recruitment systems in the country.
He also stated that it was time for the unit to expand its scope.
“Our plans are to change the principles of this war. And therefore to change the course of the war in favor of Ukraine. Si vis pacem, para bellum. Glory to Ukraine,” said Biletsky, who now serves as the commander of the newly formed corps.
The new corps will be built upon the following principles:
This transformation marks the beginning of a long-discussed process within the Ukrainian Armed Forces: the introduction of new large formations, such as army corps.
These corps aim to improve the coordination of brigades and other units during both defensive and offensive operations.
In military theory, an army corps is a permanent formation composed of several brigades.
Its main function is to coordinate brigade actions in a specific area during an offensive or defense while ensuring that units have the resources needed to fulfill their tasks.
A corps can include between two and five brigades, and its personnel numbers can range from 10,000 to 50,000 or more, depending on the country, the type of army, and the tasks at hand.
The corps command will have enough resources at its disposal to allocate them to specific areas of the front, based on the needs and strategic objectives.
Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces of Ukraine Oleksandr Syrskyi confirmed that the new corps would replace operational-tactical groups (OTGs) on the front lines.
