The Ukrainian military has a fleet of about five thousand HMMWVs in various modifications.
This was reported by Militarnyi, citing sources in the Logistics Forces Command.
The fleet of HMMWVs has reached 5,000 vehicles, most of which were delivered in unarmoured versions as part of military assistance from the United States and other countries.
The Ukrainian military widely uses these vehicles for combat and logistics missions in the brigades of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, the National Guard, and the special units of the Defence Intelligence of Ukraine.
Due to their exceptional characteristics and cross-country ability, Humvees are often used as a platform for heavy weapons: two-seater versions of the M1152 are equipped with guides for multiple launch rocket systems, anti-aircraft missile launchers and other weapons.
In addition, the Defence Forces have a significant number of specialised vehicles based on this off-road vehicle: AN/TWQ-1 Avenger anti-aircraft guns, TOW mobile anti-tank systems, APKWS adjusted rocket launchers, and 2-CT Hawkeye 15 mm self-propelled howitzers.
Given the number of similar vehicles, Ukraine has developed a sophisticated off-road vehicle repair system: brigade workshops are able to carry out minor repairs and replace damaged units. In case of severe damage, the vehicles are sent to the repair centres of the Logistics Forces Command.
The repairers of these vehicles reported a significant shortage of certain spare parts, which were partially replaced by localised copies of Ukrainian-made parts.
It is about brake pads and discs, air and fuel filters, simple mechanical parts and radiators. In addition, Ukrainian producers cover a significant part of the demand for armour glass packages.
Private Ukrainian engineers are also working on upgrading unarmoured versions of Humvees to adapt them to the conditions in the war zone. They are installing armour and reinforcing the suspension to withstand the additional load.
One of these projects is the modernisation of unarmoured M998s into a combat vehicle by CRAF or the conversion of an HMMWV into an armoured medical evacuation vehicle by the Iron Nuts team.
Militarnyi also recently reported that the Ukrainian design bureau LOCKER had developed a mobile workshop based on that machine.
