Germany is preparing to deliver more than 100 Leopard 1 tanks to Ukraine by the end of this year.
German Defense Minister Boris Pistorius announced this.
Repaired Leopard 1A5 tanks will be handed over to the Ukrainian Defense Forces.
“We will not be able to replace every tank that is currently out of service. But what we are doing… from July onward, we will continue supplying Leopard 1A5 tanks that have been refitted, and by the end of the year, there will be over 100 of them,” said Boris Pistorius.
As previously reported, Germany and Denmark will finance the transfer of 110 Leopard 1 tanks to Ukraine.
Denmark was supposed to send 80 Leopard 1 tanks to the Ukrainian military. This regarded the supply of Leopard 1A5DK tanks after repairs to Ukraine.
This equipment was purchased by the German company FFG after their final withdrawal from the Danish military in 2005.
The Danish and German sides have allocated €3 million to repair and modernize these tanks.
The German concern Krauss-Maffei Wegmann started preparing Leopard 1A5 tanks for delivery to Ukraine at the beginning of February.
The Leopard 1A5DK tanks are a modified version of the welded-turret Leopard 1A3 tanks that were brought up to the Leopard 1A5 level in the early 1990s.
Previously, Ukrainian Deputy Foreign Minister Andriy Melnyk called on Germany to provide Ukraine with more military equipment, including Leopard 2 main battle tanks. He shared in an interview with Berliner Tagesspiegel that “each Leopard 2 is literally worth its weight in gold for a decisive offensive.”
According to him, the Bundeswehr may provide more than 18 tanks that have already been delivered from its stockpile of more than 300 tanks. According to the Deputy Minister, the current number can be “tripled without jeopardizing Germany’s ability to defend itself.”
