Ukraine will receive aerial missiles from Canada to strengthen its air defense and counter Russian cruise missiles.
This was announced by Ukrainian Defense Minister Mykhailo Fedorov after talks with his Canadian counterpart.
According to him, AIM missiles, which will replenish Ukraine’s air defense stocks, are already in the process of being delivered.
The minister noted that the latest contributions under the PURL initiative were decisive in repelling massive Russian air attacks on Ukraine.
The head of the Ministry of Defense did not specify which missiles were involved. Currently, official reports indicate that Ukraine uses AIM-7, AIM-9, and AIM-120 missiles to intercept Russian missiles and drones.
These missiles, in various modifications, are being provided by Western countries, including Canada, as part of military aid.
AIM-7 Sparrow is an American medium-range air-to-air guided missile that is still in service in a number of countries.
Ukraine has integrated these missiles with Buk air defense missile system launchers under the FrankenSAM program. The missile can engage targets at a maximum range of 20 km and at altitudes from 8 meters to 15 km.
AIM-9 Sidewinder is a short-range air-to-air missile with an infrared homing head. It can be used as part of the NASAMS air defense missile systems in service with Ukraine.
The AIM-120 AMRAAM is a medium-range air-to-air missile that is part of the NASAMS air defense system.
In the anti-aircraft version, the missiles are launched from containers. Six such containers are installed on each separate launcher, which looks like a trailer platform. The range of targets is up to 25-30 km, depending on the missile modification.
The Ukrainian and Canadian defense ministers also discussed an agreement to promote the production of unmanned aerial vehicles.
