Ukrainian Defense Intelligence has disclosed details of the operation to neutralize Russian Tu-22M3 aircraft.

The Defense Intelligence of Ukraine also disclosed the name of the intelligence officer who participated in the operation.

The operation involved drone-copters attacking the Soltsy military airfield in the Novgorod region on August 19, 2023.

Ukrainian intelligence successfully destroyed one Tu-22M3 and damaged two others during the attack.

The intelligence officers responsible for the operation covered over 600 kilometers on foot through enemy territory to destroy the Russian bombers.

“They were given an extremely important task – to stop numerous air strikes on peaceful cities of Ukraine. The task was fulfilled,” the Defense Intelligence of Ukraine said.

“The operation has actually completely destabilized the work of airfields and long-range aviation base points,” the intelligence service said.

Although the mission was successful, it came at a heavy cost.

Oleh Babii, the commander covering the retreat of his comrades, lost his life during an ambush on August 30, 2023, while returning to the territory controlled by Ukraine.

Oleh Babii’s sacrifice was recognized with the posthumous award of the title of Hero of Ukraine, accompanied by the Order of the Golden Star.

Oleh Babii, leaving behind a wife and two young children, is remembered for his selfless dedication in the face of danger.
