A bipartisan group of 15 senators unveiled a bill aimed at expanding the capabilities of the US Department of Defense to replenish American stockpiles of weapons that were sent to Ukraine.
This law will allow faster purchase of weapons and combat equipment so that assistance to US allies does not reduce the protective potential of America itself.
Senators John Cornyn and Jeanne Shaheen, along with 13 other senators, introduced the Securing American ARMS Act as a separate law.
The bill will allow the Defense Department to make contracts with arms manufacturers without competition in order to quickly replenish weapons sent to friendly countries such as Ukraine.
“We’re already hearing the Ukrainians ask for more equipment based on their positive progress, and so we could have it on a more regular basis without other bureaucratic hurdles,” Jeanne Shaheen said.
Such permission can only be used for similar military assets removed from U.S. stockpiles.
Under that provision, the Pentagon must notify Congress within one week of contracting without competition.
Recently, it became known that US Secretary of Defense Lloyd Austin is organizing a meeting of senior leaders of allied countries.
The Pentagon plans to draw up long-term plans to supply Ukraine and restore its own stockpiles of weapons.
The Defense Department and representatives of the defense industry discuss how the defense industry of Western countries can do their best to equip the Ukrainian army with everything necessary in the future.
The Under Secretary of Defense for Acquisition and Sustainment, Bill LaPlant, said that one of the meetings will be held in Brussels on September 28.
The main purpose of the meeting is to determine “how we can continue to work together to ramp up production in key areas and address supply chain issues, and to increase the compatibility and interchangeability of our systems,” LaPlante told reporters at the Pentagon.
