Donald Trump has proposed invoking NATO’s Article 5 to protect the United States from migrants coming from Mexico.
The U.S. president shared the idea on his social media platform, Truth Social.
“Perhaps we should put NATO to the test – invoke Article 5 and make NATO come here to protect our southern border from further incursions by illegal immigrants,” Trump wrote.
According to Trump, this would make it possible to free up a large number of border patrol agents “to carry out other tasks.”
It should be noted that the only time NATO’s Article 5 has been invoked was after the September 11, 2001 terrorist attacks in the United States.
At that time, the Alliance officially recognized the attack on the U.S. as an attack on all NATO members, which provided the basis for collective action, including political, military, and logistical support. This later led to the launch of operations in Afghanistan against al-Qaeda and the Taliban.
Following his second return to power, the U.S. administration has declared stopping illegal migration – carried out primarily through the Mexican border – as one of its key priorities.
In January last year, a multi-thousand-strong contingent of U.S. military personnel was ordered to redeploy and deploy along the southern border to reinforce security.
In particular, U.S. Marine Corps service members were sent there.
V-22 Osprey tiltrotor aircraft were used to transport the military units.
In addition, the United States also deployed a National Guard contingent in the border area.
During Donald Trump’s first term, the United States built hundreds of kilometers of new sections and replaced older segments of the so-called wall aimed at preventing the flow of illegal migrants from Latin America crossing the border from Mexico into the United States.
