U.S. President Donald Trump has extended for a year the sanctions previously imposed on Russia over the war in Ukraine.

This is stated in a White House document submitted to the U.S. Federal Register. It will come into force on February 28.

The US introduced the National Emergency Decree over the situation in Ukraine back in 2014.

U.S. President Barack Obama’s Executive Order 13660, published on March 6, 2014, provided for the freezing of property of “a number of individuals involved in the development of the situation in Ukraine.”

Initially, it was about those who had contributed to the annexation of Crimea.

Later, during the first Trump presidency and the presidency of Joe Biden, the list of sanctions under this regime was expanded as Russian aggression grew – in 2018 and 2022.

The document states that the actions and policies of the individuals described in previous U.S. administration orders “continue to pose an extraordinary threat to the national security interests and foreign policy of the United States.”

Therefore, the sanctions should be extended for another year.

In addition, they “undermine democratic processes and institutions in Ukraine, threaten its peace, security, stability, sovereignty, territorial integrity and facilitate the misappropriation of its assets.”

In February 2025, Trump and his administration did not deny that the sanctions imposed on Russia could be lifted in the future. The US is ready to do so if Moscow makes progress in resolving the war in Ukraine.

The constant tightening of sanctions against Russia has been a central part of the allied effort to put pressure on the Kremlin. Many sanctions were imposed by the United States in partnership with European allies.

Previously, investigative journalists exposed nine companies from the Czech Republic, Poland, Sweden and Switzerland that supplied sanctioned industrial equipment to Russia. As previously reported, a company from the Rostec corporation signed contracts for the purchase of American and German equipment worth RUB 720 million to expand the production of electronic warfare.
