The United States, along with the European leaders, the President of the European Commission, and the Secretary-General of NATO, discussed the post-war security guarantees for Ukraine.
Militarnyi informs about this with reference to Reuters.
US President Joe Biden had consultations with the allies, including French President Emmanuel Macron and British Prime Minister Boris Johnson regarding the security guarantees for Ukraine during and beyond the war with Russia.
“It would be military supplies so that Ukraine can deal with a new attack or, possibly, guarantees that would see us get involved if Ukraine is attacked in a way where we could assess how to assist it,” quoted the agency the Іpokesman of the French President, who shared about the results of the meeting.
France could become one of the global guarantors of Ukraine’s security after the end of the war with Russia.
According to the French official, these guarantees would look more like the defense clause the European Union currently has among its members, rather than the defense mechanism similar to NATO’s Article 5, which triggers automatic military support if a member is attacked.
According to him, the allies also discussed the need to persuade non-EU and non-G7 countries to treat the war in Ukraine as an issue that concerns world peace and not just Europe or the West.
Among those with whom President Biden discussed Ukraine’s security guarantees were Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen, German Chancellor Olaf Scholz, NATO Secretary-General Jens Stoltenberg, as well as the leaders of Poland, Japan, and Italy, Reuters reported.
The agreement on security guarantees for Ukraine is currently being finalized by the legal subgroups involved in negotiations with Russia.
This was stated by Mykhailo Podolyak, Adviser to the Head of the President’s Office.
According to him, Ukraine had a successful formulary decision on how to withdraw from the war and secure the safety guarantees. And a relatively clear formula is marked in the Istanbul communiqué.
However, Podolyak noted, the negotiating background changed after the war crimes of the Russian army in Bucha and other cities of the Kyiv region were uncovered. And later, the missile strike on the station in Kramatorsk was committed, and the destruction of Mariupol continues.
