Today, the German Bundestag overwhelmingly approved a petition that expands the assistance to Ukraine and supports the delivery of weapons including heavy arms to the country.

A document titled “Protecting Peace and Freedom in Europe – Comprehensive Support for Ukraine” was adopted, upon a joint proposal of the CDU/CSU opposition bloc and coalition parties.

The petition was passed on Thursday, with 586 votes in favor, 100 against, and seven abstentions.

German lawmakers called on the federal government to “continue and accelerate however possible the supply of necessary equipment to Ukraine, and expand the supplies through heavy weapons and complex [weapons] systems.”

The provision of weapons to Ukraine should be conducted without weakening Germany’s defense capabilities, said the parliamentarians.

The MPs had also supported the steps taken by the government, including sanctions against Russia.

It also covered assisting in the investigation of war crimes and restructuring Germany’s infrastructure so that it is no longer dependent on Russian energy supplies.

“The German Bundestag strongly condemns Russia’s brutal aggressive war against Ukraine. At the same time, Russia is grossly violating international and humanitarian law and is trying to destroy the European peace order forever, ” the document reads.

It was previously reported that the German government is considering supplying the Ukrainian servicemen with Flugabwehrkanonenpanzer Gepard anti-aircraft self-propelled guns from Krauss-Maffei Wegmann’s industrial reserves.

This also regards the training of the Ukrainian military with Panzerhaubitze 2000 artillery systems, which the Netherlands intends to supply to the Armed Forces.
