The former commander of the Russian Navy’s Northern Fleet flagship Admiral Gorshkov, who promised to hit a five-story residential building with a Zircon missile, was buried in Russia.

The Russian media reported on this.

Igor Krokhmal’s funeral took place in St. Petersburg. He died on December 22, 2023, at the age of 52.

Captain Krokhmal became famous due to one of the reports on Russian television, where he stated that the Admiral Gorshkov frigate, which was under his command at the time, was capable of hitting a five-story building with a Zircon missile.

Prior to that, Krokhmal was the commander of the battlecruiser Pyotr Velikiy and the frigate Admiral Kasatonov.

The frigate Admiral Gorshkov, commanded by the deceased captain, became the first carrier of modern Zircon hypersonic cruise missiles.

The 3M22 Zircon hypersonic missile was developed by NPO Mashinostroyeniya for use from the 3S14 universal vertical launcher. The Russian Navy officially adopted the missile on January 4, 2023, coinciding with the induction of the Admiral Gorshkov frigate, which serves as a carrier for this type of missile, into the Northern Fleet.

So far, the missile’s exact tactical and technical characteristics have not been officially reported. However, according to Western media, the range of the missile is estimated to be between 600 and 1000 km.

The maximum flight speed of the missile is about 8 Machs. The weight of the warhead is estimated at 300-400 kg.

Militarnyi previously reported that during February 7, 2024, morning missile attack on Ukraine, the Russians used the newest Zircon hypersonic missile.

The missile was launched from the territory of the temporarily occupied Crimean peninsula in the direction of Kyiv. According to the channel’s author, the missile’s trajectory differed from the trajectory of the Onyx and Kinzhal missiles used earlier.

During the flight, the missile cannot overcome the hypersonic boundary. At the site of the missile impact, debris probably belonging to a 3M22 Zircon missile was discovered.
