New attack submarine HMS Anson joins the Royal Navy fleet.
The Royal Navy reported about this.
The submarine was commissioned on August 31 at BAE Systems’ yard in Cumbria in front of her crew and their families, as well as naval leaders, Secretary of State for Defence Ben Wallace and Prime Minister Boris Johnson.
Anson is the fifth of the new Astute-class submarines being built by BAE Systems for the Royal Navy fleet. A total of 7 submarines of this class are to be built.
The christening ceremony of the nuclear submarine took place in December 2020.
The Anson submarine was laid down in 2011 and launched in April 2021. In February 2022, the submarine dived for the first time.
The new boat joins HMS Astute, Ambush, Artful and Audacious, which were transferred to the British Navy earlier.
The 97-meter, 7,400-ton Astute-class nuclear-powered submarines are the UK Navy’s largest and most powerful hunter-killer submarines.
It develops underwater speed up to 29 knots. The working depth of diving amounts to 300 meters.
Its armament comprises six 533-mm torpedo tubes that use Spearfish torpedoes. On board there are Tomahawk cruise missiles for destroying land targets and Harpoon anti-ship missiles, which are launched from torpedo tubes and are designed to destroy enemy surface ships.
These submarines are designed both for actions as part of groups and independently. Astute-class submarines can also drop sabotage groups and gather intelligence.
According to official data, the cost of one British Astute-class nuclear-powered submarine goes as high as 1.3 billion pounds.
