Taiwan will hold military drills this week simulating the defense of the island against the Chinese invasion.
At the same time, on August 8, Beijing announced further military training to take place near the island.
This was reported by ChannelNewsAsia.
The Taiwanese military stated that the island’s forces will work through the anti-landing exercises in the southernmost county of Pingtung on Tuesday and Thursday.
“We will practice counter moves against simulated enemy attacks on Taiwan,” Lou Woei-jye, Spokesman for the Eighth Army Corps.
These exercises will include the deployment of hundreds of troops and approximately 40 howitzer guns. Lou mentioned that the Taiwanese drills were previously scheduled and are not being held in response to China’s exercises.
It is emphasized that the island is routinely staging military drills simulating a Chinese invasion.
In particular, last month, the exercises included repelling the attacks from the sea in a “joint interception operation” as part of its largest annual training.
China’s newest military drills, announced on August 8, will focus on anti-submarine and maritime assault operations. Reuters reports analysts and diplomats noting that Beijing thus continues to put pressure on Taiwan’s defenses.
The duration and exact location of the drills were not announced. However, Taiwan has already eased restrictions on flights near the six areas where previous drills were held.
They emphasize that in addition to launching short-range ballistic missiles, Chinese warships, fighter jets, and drones were actively maneuvering around the island.
Also, a person familiar with the situation as he was involved in security planning shared that shortly before the drills ended, up to 10 Chinese and Taiwanese warships were maneuvering around the unofficial middle line of the Taiwan Strait.
Wang Wenbin, Chinese Foreign Ministry Spokesman stated that China conducts regular military exercises “in its waters” in an open, transparent, and professional manner. He also added that Taiwan is part of China.
When covering the possible new restrictions on civil air and sea traffic, Wang claimed that relevant departments have issued timely announcements in accordance with national and international laws.
