Sweden placed an order for additional NLAW light anti-tank systems.
Saab reported this.
The Swedish Defence Materiel Administration (FMV) awarded Saab a contract to supply the hand-held anti-tank weapon systems.
This order was placed within an existing framework agreement between FMV and Saab.
The order value is approximately SEK 900 million (81.7 million euros).
“We are looking forward to continuing to work closely with the Swedish defense forces and contributing to their anti-tank capability with our proven and trusted NLAW system,” says Görgen Johansson, Head of Saab’s Dynamics business area.
Delivery of NLAW light anti-tank systems is scheduled between 2024 and 2026.
The NLAW anti-tank system is a 12.5 kg man-portable weapon. It was developed by the Swedish Saab AB group in cooperation with the British division of the Thales group on the assignment and funding of the British Ministry of Defense.
The NLAW is a shoulder-fired, disposable anti-tank missile system with an effective firing range of up to 800 meters. The system does not use an active targeting system. Instead, it uses a predicted line of sight, including magnetic and optical sensors.
Before firing, the operator using the sight tracks the angular velocity of the target for three seconds, which is remembered by the inertial block of the missile. During the flight, it makes the necessary corrections, adjusting the flight direction. The missile warhead can destroy a well-protected modern battle tank.
The missile flies approximately a meter above the tank turret before striking. The system is extremely effective in situations when the operator can only see a tiny portion of the enemy’s equipment.
The NLAW can fight not only tanks and other armored vehicles but is also effective against lighter targets. In direct attack mode, it can be used against trucks, buses, and other vehicles.
