Sweden is evaluating the potential acquisition of K9 Thunder self-propelled howitzers manufactured by South Korea’s Hanwha Aerospace.
According to Defence Blog, citing local media and Dagens Nyheter, Swedish defense planners are considering tracked artillery platforms that can operate effectively in deep snow and challenging terrain, conditions in which wheeled systems have limited performance.
South Korean sources report that Sweden is considering the formation of two battalions equipped with K9 Thunder systems.
This would also involve expanding cooperation with neighboring countries – Norway and Finland – which already operate these systems.
The K9 Thunder is a 155mm self-propelled howitzer on a tracked chassis. It is capable of firing standard ammunition at ranges of up to 40 km, and up to 50 km when using rocket-assisted projectiles. The crew consists of five personnel: commander, driver, gunner, and two loaders.
The system is powered by a 1,000 hp MTU diesel engine, providing a top speed of up to 67 km/h. Its armor offers protection against small-arms fire and shell fragments. The howitzer is equipped with an automated loading system, enabling it to maintain a high rate of fire.
