Sweden and Belgium Ready to Join Security Guarantees for Ukraine After Peace Agreement

Sweden plans to deploy Gripen fighter jets over Ukraine after a peace agreement, with Belgium also joining the initiative.

The announcement was made following a meeting of the Coalition of the Willing in Paris, attended by Ukraine, the United States, and European partners. The decision was confirmed through official statements from Sweden and Belgium.

Sweden stated that it is ready to deploy its forces in Ukraine once a peace deal is reached, contributing to post-war security guarantees.

Stockholm stressed that its involvement would be limited to the post-conflict phase and carried out under a multinational mandate.

A key part of Sweden’s contribution would be the use of Gripen fighter jets for air surveillance over Ukraine.

The focus is on monitoring the air situation and ensuring compliance with the ceasefire, not on the combat use of aviation.

Sweden is also ready to provide naval mine-clearing capabilities in the Black Sea, which is considered a critical security priority.

In addition, emphasis was placed on continuing the training of Ukrainian military officers under Swedish programs.

All of these steps are possible only after a peace agreement is reached, clear rules for the use of forces are established, and the Swedish parliament grants approval.

At the same time, Belgium has declared its readiness to make its own contribution.

Brussels stated it will focus on air and maritime capabilities, as well as personnel training, which the Belgian side sees as its practical contribution.

Belgium emphasized that it would act within a broad international coalition of Ukraine’s partners.

Special emphasis was also placed on the presence of strong support from the United States.

According to participants’ statements, U.S. leadership in monitoring and deterrence is expected to be a key factor in the effectiveness of the future mission.

Members of the Coalition of the Willing emphasized that coordinated action by the united West can ensure long-term stability and help shape a new European security architecture.

On January 6, the Coalition of the Willing was expected to decide on the deployment of multinational forces to Ukraine.
