A submarine is believed to have attacked an Iranian Navy warship in the Indian Ocean, causing it to sink off the coast of Sri Lanka.
Reuters reported on this, citing sources in the Sri Lankan Navy and Ministry of Defense.
It is preliminarily known that the ship in question is the frigate Dena, Moudge (Mowj) class. At around 5 a.m. local time, the crew sent a distress signal 40 nautical miles off the coast.
Sri Lankan authorities said they rescued 32 people who were on board the ship and recovered several bodies from the sea. Clash Report published a video showing the torpedo hitting the ship.
Sources in the Navy and the Ministry of Defense reported at least 101 people missing as a result of the sinking of the warship.
However, a Sri Lankan Navy spokesman later stated that reports of the number of missing persons were false and dismissed any reports about the cause of the frigate’s sinking.
He said that 32 people injured in the incident had been “rescued” by the country’s navy and were being treated at a hospital in the southern port city of Galle.
According to the spokesman, the navy received a distress signal from the Iranian ship and notified the air force, which launched a search-and-rescue operation.
He said they were focused on rescuing the people on the Iranian ship and would later investigate the cause of the incident.
The spokesperson also added that the Sri Lankan military did not observe any other ships or aircraft in the area where the Iranian Navy frigate sank.
Amid this report, it is worth noting that the US has announced its intention to completely destroy Iran’s military fleet as part of a joint operation with Israel, which has been ongoing since February 28.
Currently, it is reported that a significant part of Iran’s surface combat ships have been destroyed. In particular, the Americans disabled INS Makran, Iran’s only expeditionary ship, at the Bandar Abbas naval base.
