Counterintelligence detained two Russian military intelligence agents who were recording the effects of the Oreshnik strike in the Lviv region on the night of January 8-9, 2026.

The SSU reported on this.

According to the investigation, the Russians recruited a 64-year-old resident of Mukachevo and his 22-year-old neighbor to gather information.

After the shelling, the younger of the two came to the Lviv region, where he visited the strike sites, photographed the damage, and recorded the coordinates on maps.

He then passed the information he had gathered to the older agent, who remained in Mukachevo and reported directly to the Russians.

It is reported that SSU officers detained both men at the same time: one at his place of residence in Mukachevo, and the other in the Lviv region, while he was conducting reconnaissance near the site of the enemy strike.

The Russians tasked their agents with determining the extent of damage to Ukrainian facilities after the strike.

“During searches, electronic devices containing evidence of work for the Russian special services were seized from the detainees. The SSU also intercepted conversations between one of the agents and their supervisor. These audio recordings have been added to the criminal case file,” the statement reads.

The detained men were informed that they were suspected of high treason. They are in custody and face life imprisonment with confiscation of property.

We remind you that on the night of January 9, Russian troops attacked with a medium-range Oreshnik ballistic missile from the Kapustin Yar training ground in the Astrakhan region.

SSU investigators classified the use of this weapon against Ukraine’s civilian infrastructure as a war crime by the aggressor country. The fragments and components of the missile found have the status of material evidence.

It is reported that the Russian medium-range ballistic missile was developed on the basis of the RS-26 Rubezh.
