A meeting on national security is ongoing in Kaliningrad. Nikolai Patrushev, Secretary of the Security Council of Russia arrived for it.
It is reported by “Ukrayinska Pravda” with reference to the Russian media.
It is worth noting that the meeting is taking place amid Lithuania’s announcement of the transit embargo from Russia with regard to a number of EU-sanctioned goods.
It is reported that the meeting will be attended by Alexander Hutsan, Presidential Envoy in the North-Western Federal District, other heads of the Northwest Federal District, and representatives of ministries and departments.
Also, a meeting is scheduled with the Governor of the Kaliningrad region Anton Alikhanov.
At the same time, the Security Council of Russia noted that Patrushev had planned this trip even before Lithuania imposed transit restrictions and that it is not related to these events.
Yesterday, Anton Alikhanov, Governor of the Kaliningrad region reported that Lithuania imposed an embargo on the shipment of goods from Russia through its territory.
According to the Russian officials, from 40 to 50 percent of cargoes transported between the Russian Federation and the Kaliningrad region have been prohibited.
In the Kremlin, such actions of Lithuania are considered “illegal” and “unprecedented”, as claimed by Peskov.
Kaliningrad Region of the Russian Federation is the westernmost federal subject of the Russian Federation. It borders Poland to the south, Lithuania to the north and east. In the west, the region is washed by the waters of the Baltic Sea. The headquarters of the Baltic Fleet of the Russian Federation is located in Kaliningrad.
From June 3 to June 17, NATO member states conducted BALTOPS 22 exercises in the Baltic Sea. In total, 14 countries participated in the exercises, including over 45 ships, 75 aircraft, and approximately 7,000 personnel.
It is worth noting that the European countries started to actively review their security strategy in light of threats from the Russian Federation. In particular, Denmark has decided not to decommission its F-16 fleet until the country’s air force’s new F-35s become operation-ready.
At the end of June, a summit of NATO member states will be held in Madrid. It will consider the matters of membership of Sweden and Finland in the Alliance. In addition, decisions will be made on the new Strategic Concept of NATO, assistance to Ukraine, and further interaction with Russia.
