Satellite images have confirmed a Ukrainian drone strike on the NPO Bazalt ammunition plant in Krasnoarmeysk, Moscow region, known for producing warheads for Shahed drones.
The images, published by the open-source intelligence group CyberBoroshno, show damage to the plant’s central production workshop. Although cloud cover obscures parts of the site, the impact of the strike is clearly visible.
The attack took place on the night of May 7. Eyewitness videos captured at least three explosions at the facility, which is part of Russia’s state-owned defense conglomerate Rostec.
NPO Bazalt is a key enterprise in Russia’s defense-industrial complex. In addition to its main headquarters in Moscow, the company operates a research and production site in Krasnoarmeysk, as well as production facilities in Tula and Nerekhta, Kostroma region.
The company specializes in the full cycle of development, production, modernization, and disposal of ammunition for ground forces, aviation, and the navy.
Its product range includes artillery shells, mortar rounds, aerial bombs, engineering munitions, anti-tank weapons, and grenade launchers.
Bazalt also manufactures infantry flamethrowers, cluster munitions, thermobaric charges, and other specialized weaponry.
A document leak from a Russian Shahed UAV manufacturer previously revealed that Bazalt produces one type of drone warhead—the 50-kg OFZBCH-50 high-explosive fragmentation incendiary warhead.
In addition, Bazalt manufactures OFBCH-2.5 warheads, used in some Geran (Gerbera) drone versions.
The company also engages in research and development, including early work on glide and correction modules for aerial bombs — precursors to Russia’s UMPK guided bomb kits.
