Safran.AI will provide Ukraine with a data processing platform for analyzing French satellite images.
Intelligence Online reported that the platform would be received by the Main Intelligence Directorate of the Ministry of Defence of Ukraine.
The agreement was signed in February, ahead of an anticipated halt in U.S. intelligence-sharing with Ukraine.
Previously, American intelligence played a key role in supplying data to the Ukrainian Defense Forces on Russian troop in occupied territories and within Russia.
In March it became known that France was ready to provide Ukraine with intelligence data instead of the United States.
Safran.AI is the research and technology center of the Safran Group, a French multinational specializing in aerospace, defense, and security.
Safran is betting on AI as a key driver of future competitiveness. Safran.AI plays an important role in the realization of this strategy.
Since Safran.AI is a research center and not a company that publicly discloses all its technologies, specific details of their methods for analyzing satellite images are not publicly available.
While specific details remain undisclosed, Safran.AI’s technology is expected to use deep learning to detect and analyze military assets in satellite images.
Deep learning technologies are often used to automatically detect objects and changes in images, such as aircraft, runways, buildings, and vehicles.
For Ukraine, intel assistance from France has become critically important. Recently Militarnyi reported that the U.S. aerospace company Maxar Technologies had disabled Ukraine’s access to its satellite images.
Maxar was perhaps the most important supplier of commercial satellite imagery for Ukraine, providing data on Russian troop movements.
