Russian forces launched attacks on Ukraine’s energy infrastructure overnight on February 3 and into the morning, during a period of extreme cold. Nighttime temperatures in several regions fell below –20°C.

Explosions were reported in Kyiv, Kharkiv, and the surrounding region, Sumy, Konotop, Dnipro, and the Zaporizhzhia region, according to Suspilne.

The missile-and-drone attack occurred ahead of a new round of trilateral talks involving representatives of Ukraine, the United States, and Russia in Abu Dhabi.

The air raid alert in Kyiv began at 12:24 a.m. due to the threat of Russian drones, and after 1 a.m., the city was attacked with missiles.

Following a series of explosions, damage was reported to several high-rise residential buildings and to a kindergarten, which caught fire. In particular, a fire broke out on the 26th floor of a building in the Darnytskyi district, causing destruction. One person was injured. Non-residential buildings in the capital were also damaged.

On Tuesday night, Russian forces attacked Kharkiv with drones and ballistic missiles. Mayor Ihor Terekhov said the Russians were deliberately targeting energy infrastructure.

As a result of the attack, the heat carrier had to be drained for 820 buildings supplied by one of the city’s largest thermal power plants. Disruptions to electric public transport are possible. A total of 101 “Points of Invincibility” will operate around the clock in the city, where residents can warm up, have hot drinks, and charge their devices.

Following the nighttime attack, power supply disruptions were also reported in Dnipro.

At around 5:30 a.m., the Ukrainian Air Force reported likely missile launches by Russian Tu-95MS strategic bombers from the Caspian Sea area.

In Vinnytsia and the surrounding region, residents heard explosions at around 6:20 and 7:00 a.m. Monitoring channels reported an attack on the region involving Russian drones and cruise missiles.
