A Russian spy who monitored the movement of military cargo sent to Ukraine has been detained in Greece.
This is reported by Ekathimerini.
The spy was arrested in the city of Alexandroupolis, in the northeast of the country.
The suspect, a 59-year-old Georgian national, had lived in Greece for years and worked as a painter.
Authorities claim that he was recruited in autumn 2024 by another Georgian man with alleged ties to Russia’s military intelligence, the GRU.
Investigators said they had found evidence on the suspect’s mobile phone indicating he had monitored military facilities for at least six months.
He allegedly photographed and documented the movement of military cargo, particularly shipments bound for Ukraine, and sent the information to his handler.
During questioning, the man reportedly told authorities he was “ready to help his homeland for any amount.”
His recruiter, also an ethnic Georgian and a suspected former Russian intelligence asset, had fled to Lithuania, where he was arrested in March, according to Greek officials.
Greek law enforcement sources said the case highlighted how pro-Russian sentiment had influenced the suspect’s motivations.
The arrest comes amid heightened concerns across Europe and the United States about Russian intelligence activity targeting military support for Ukraine.
In April, the U.S. Department of Justice in April announced the sentencing of former U.S. Army intelligence analyst Korbein Schultz to seven years in prison for selling classified information, including documents related to the war in Ukraine.
Between May 2022 and March 2024, Schultz allegedly provided “dozens of sensitive U.S. military documents” to a contact in China.
These included an internal Army analysis of lessons learned from the Russian-Ukrainian war, technical manuals, and information about U.S. military satellites and missile defense systems.
Schultz was instructed to prioritize “original and exclusive documents” concerning the war in Ukraine and the capabilities of key U.S. military platforms. He received $42,000 for the classified material.
