A Russian Gerbera unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV), which entered Lithuania from Belarus earlier this week, has been found.
The report comes from LRT.
The downed UAV was located today by military personnel at the Gaižunai training area in the Jonava district.
Lithuania’s Minister of National Defence, Dovilė Šakalienė, later confirmed the discovery. “We confirm that the drone has been found. More information will be provided shortly,” she said.
Military investigators and explosive ordnance disposal teams were dispatched to the site.
The Lithuanian Armed Forces said additional information about the UAV would be clarified later. The drone was found during a search operation involving another UAV.
“It will be checked for any potential threat. After that, the same procedures will be followed as with the first Gerbera drone discovered in early July,” the military said in a statement on Facebook.
On the morning of Monday, July 28, a Russian drone entered Lithuanian airspace from Belarus and remained airborne for some time.
The Lithuanian National Crisis Management Centre reported that the UAV had been flying at an altitude of around 200 meters and had been last recorded near the capital between 4:40 a.m. and 5:00 a.m.
Following that alert, the Lithuanian military launched a search operation. The crashed Gerbera was not located until Friday.
This was the second such incident in July. Earlier, another unidentified drone, later also identified as a Gerbera, crashed near the closed Šumskas checkpoint, approximately one kilometer from the Belarusian border.
