Russian Army Receives New BMPT Terminator Vehicles
News

The Russian Army has taken delivery of a new batch of BMPT Terminator tank support combat vehicles, which have already been used in the war against Ukraine.

Uralvagonzavod, a subsidiary of the state corporation Rostec, supplied the vehicles.

The company stated that the delivery marked the completion of a contract with Russia’s Ministry of Defense, but did not disclose the number of units involved.

Video released by the manufacturer showed at least five new Terminator vehicles being transported by rail.

According to Uralvagonzavod, the latest version features enhanced protection based on combat experience in Ukraine. The 2025 model includes additional explosive reactive armor, reinforced side protection, anti-drone measures, and electronic warfare systems.

Footage also showed anti-drone mesh screens with metal spikes installed at the front and rear of the hull.

BMPT

The BMPT, or tank support fighting vehicle, is designed to provide fire support for tank units and engage lightly armored targets, such as tanks, fortifications, and infantry. It is armed with two 30 mm automatic cannons, two AG-30 automatic grenade launchers, and anti-tank guided missiles from the Ataka system.

The vehicle is based on the T-90A main battle tank chassis and has a crew of five.

The BMPT remains relatively rare in Russian service. Only 12 were ordered under a 2017 contract, and in 2020, just eight were confirmed to have been delivered to the 90th Tank Division.

Russia first deployed the BMPT to Ukraine in 2022, where they were used in the Luhansk region. Ukrainian forces reported destroying  such a vehicle in February 2023.

The independent monitoring group Oryx has confirmed at least one BMPT damaged and two destroyed during the war.

It remains unclear how many BMPTs are currently in production, although Uralvagonzavod has recently stated that it plans to expand output for the Russian military.
