Russian forces have launched massive attacks on energy infrastructure facilities in various regions of Ukraine.
As a result of the shelling on October 1, significant damage was recorded, along with power outages in populated areas and disruptions in the operation of critical facilities.
One of the most concerning incidents was an emergency situation at the Chernobyl NPP facilities in the city of Slavutych, Kyiv region. Due to power surges, the New Safe Confinement temporarily ceased operation.
This facility is a key element of environmental protection: it isolates the destroyed fourth reactor of the Chernobyl NPP and prevents the spread of radioactive substances. Power outages create potential risks for environmental safety.
In the city of Chernihiv, most boiler houses stopped operating due to the power outage. This may affect preparations for the heating season and create additional difficulties for residents.
According to official information, following the enemy’s attack, 307,000 consumers were disconnected from the power grid. Energy workers are working on restoring the supply; however, the damage is extensive.
In Chernihiv, hourly power outage schedules have been introduced. The current capacity of the energy system is insufficient to simultaneously meet the power demands of all consumers.
In the Sumy region, the Konotop and Shostka districts are partially without power. Energy workers report damage to critical infrastructure facilities.
In the city of Dnipro, residents observed a bright flash in the sky immediately before power outages began. However, the press service of DTEK Dnipro Electric Networks informed Suspilne that no damage or short circuits were recorded. Additionally, astronomer Liudmyla Marchenko told Suspilne that the flash is unlikely to be related to any celestial body, such as a comet or meteorite.
Meanwhile, energy companies are working at an intensified pace, striving to restore electricity supplies in the affected regions as quickly as possible.
Ukraine’s energy system is already preparing for the winter season: repair and modernization work is being carried out at facilities, necessary equipment reserves are being accumulated, and protection of key infrastructure is being strengthened.
Last year, Volodymyr Zelensky reported that Russia was developing a plan to attack Ukrainian nuclear power plants based on satellite images.
