British analysts have suggested that Russia is helping China prepare for an attack on Taiwan.
The Royal United Services Institute for Defence and Security Studies (RUSI) has released a report on the strengthening of relations between China and Russia, including the so-called ‘military mutual defense.’
Experts from the world’s oldest and leading defense and security think tank in the UK have studied documents that show ambiguous interaction between the two countries.
In particular, this is a document dated September 2024 (the initial agreement was signed in 2021), which sets out the terms of payment and delivery of high-altitude parachute systems and landing vehicles by Russia to China.
According to the agreement, China will receive 37 light amphibious assault vehicles, 11 amphibious self-propelled anti-tank guns, 11 armored personnel carriers, and command and observation vehicles. The total value of the contract is estimated at over $210 million.
In addition to the equipment, Russia also agreed to provide training for the Chinese military.
Although the documents do not directly mention Taiwan, the RUSI’s analysis shows that the agreement provides China with advanced parachute landing capabilities necessary for a possible invasion.
According to the Associated Press, Chinese President Xi Jinping has already hinted at such a scenario.
The publication also mentions an interview with CIA Director William Burns on CBS’s Face the Nation program.
“We know, as has been made public, that President Xi has instructed the PLA, the Chinese military leadership, to be ready by 2027 to invade Taiwan,” Burns said.
In addition, international media emphasize that the rapprochement between Moscow and Beijing in the defense sector can be observed without access to secret agreements.
“Over the past year, Xi and Russian President Vladimir Putin have attended each other’s military parades, and in 2024, their forces have conducted 14 joint exercises – almost twice as many as a decade ago,” The Washington Post writes.
It is also noted that Chinese military delegations had participated in the Russian-Belarusian Zapad-2025 exercise, where Russia had demonstrated high-altitude landing of heavy equipment – the very equipment that China was seeking to practice under the published agreements.
Earlier it was reported that Chinese experts had visited the Russian factory for the production of Harpy drones.
