The Russian Federation has reaffirmed its support for China’s position on Taiwan, declaring that the island belongs to China and falls under Beijing’s sovereignty.

Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov made the statement in an interview with the TASS news agency.

Lavrov said that Russia considers Taiwan an inseparable part of China and opposes any form of Taiwanese independence.

He added that Beijing has the right to defend its sovereignty and territorial integrity, effectively endorsing the possibility of military action against Taiwan.

Lavrov also accused Western countries of backing Taiwan through arms sales and technological and economic cooperation.

He also addressed the possibility of an escalation in the Taiwan Strait, noting that the procedures in such cases are regulated by the Treaty of Good-Neighborliness, Friendship, and Cooperation between Russia and China, signed on July 16, 2001.

One of the key principles of this document is mutual support in matters of protecting state unity and territorial integrity.

Lavrov also separately criticized Japan, accusing its new leadership of intensifying militarization.

Japan’s new prime minister, Takaichi, recently stated that the use of military force in the event of a conflict over Taiwan could be regarded as a “situation threatening survival.”

Such a classification would give Japan legal grounds to intervene in a potential war.

Possible Joint Actions by Russia and China

Recently, NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte warned of the most dangerous scenario since World War II – simultaneous aggression by Russia and China.

According to him, Beijing is closely monitoring the situation around Taiwan and, in the event of military action, could encourage Moscow to initiate a new escalation in Europe.

Such coordination between the two countries would create a global security crisis and pose the threat of a two-front war for NATO.

The Alliance is already building a multi-layered deterrence system, including strengthening the Ukrainian army, forming a “coalition of the willing” in Europe, and providing strong support from the United States. The aim is to demonstrate to Moscow and Beijing that any aggression will be met with a firm response.
