The Armed Forces of Ukraine have integrated the Romanian CA-95 short-range anti-aircraft missile system into their service.
The National Information Portal “ Tysk” published the photos.
The Romanian CA-95 is based on the Soviet Strela-1 system, an early version of the Strela-10, and has been adapted to meet local requirements.
The system is mounted on a TABC-79 vehicle produced by ROMARM, replacing the BRDM-2 light armored vehicle used in the original design.
A modernized version of this SAM, the CA-95M, is in service with the air defense units of the Romanian Army.
The system features four launchers equipped with infrared-guided surface-to-air missiles. It has a range of 800 meters to 4.2 kilometers and can target aircraft, helicopters, cruise missiles, and drones.
The system can engage air targets at altitudes between 50 and 3,500 meters. The missile’s maximum pursuit speed is 310 m/s, while the speed when firing in the opposite direction is 220 m/s.
The CA-95 air defense system is equipped with protection against small arms fire and shell fragments and a system designed to defend against radiological and biological threats.
Its modernized version features electric drives for target guidance, replacing the manual controls found in the older model.
The anti-aircraft missile system can be guided autonomously using an optical system or can receive external target designations from radars.
Despite its physical and technological obsolescence, the CA-95 is still suitable for countering drones and cruise missiles, though it struggles to effectively engage aircraft and helicopters.
The exact number of CA-95 systems transferred to Ukraine is not disclosed. According to the Military Balance website, as of 2025, Romania has 48 CA-95M systems in service.
In May 2024, the Serhiy Prytula Foundation supplied nine optical devices for modernizing Strela-10 anti-aircraft systems.
