The Polish Army has received a new batch of 38 modern M1A2 Abrams tanks from the United States.

This was announced by Polish Defence Minister Władysław Kosyniak-Kamysz.

The transfer of these tanks is part of the contract for the purchase of 250 M1A2 SEPv3 Abrams tanks by Poland, which is expected to be completed by 2026.

As of today, Poland has received 85 tanks of this type in three batches, supplementing the South Korean K2 Black Panther, German Leopard 2 and Polish PT-91 tanks in its army.

The tanks arriving in Poland will first go to the Wojskowe Zakłady Motoryzacyjne Military Plant in Poznan. This plant has been operating the Regional Maintenance Hub for Abrams Main Battle Tanks for more than a year.

There, specialists check the key components of the vehicles for possible damage caused by unfavorable marine climatic conditions.

Along with the tanks, Poland also received 14 armored evacuation vehicles as part of the third batch.

The first batch of 28 new tanks was delivered by sea in January 2025.

Poland will spend USD 6 billion to purchase tanks and related equipment. For these funds, Poland will receive:

  • 250 AN/VLQ-12 CREW Duke IED countermeasures systems
  • 26 M88A2 HERCULES evacuation vehicles
  • 17 M1110 bridge pavers
  • 276 M2 machine guns of .50 caliber
  • 500 M240C machine guns of 7.62 mm caliber
  • 15 AGT1500 gas turbine engines

It should be noted that, despite the purchase of tanks, Poland faces problems such as the possibility of timely maintenance and support of the vehicles.

According to Jacek A. Goszczyński, General Director of WZL 1 (Wojskowe Zakłady Lotnicze Nr 1), there is currently no qualified company in Poland or in Europe that could carry out full maintenance and repair of gas turbine engines used in Abrams tanks.

He notes that currently, engines have to be sent to the United States for major overhauls.

There they are serviced at the Anniston Army Depot, Alabama, which is the only place in the world where complete replacement of AGT1500C gas turbine engine components is possible.

Currently, the Ministry of National Defence of Poland is considering the possibility of establishing an authorized service center for the repair of such engines in Poland in cooperation with Honeywell.
