The Polish government is negotiating with the United States on the possibility of launching the inside production of FGM-148 Javelin anti-tank missile systems. This was announced during a recent meeting of the National Defense Committee of the Senate.

Militarnyi reports it with reference to the broadcast of the National Defense Committee meeting of the Polish Senate.

On October 25, the 37th session of the National Defense Committee of the Senate was held with the participation of Wojciech Skurkiewicz, Deputy Minister of National Defense, Dariusz Plut, Deputy Chief of the General Staff of the Polish Armed Forces, Artura Kuptel, Head of the Armaments Agency, and Mateusz Sarosiek, Deputy Director of the Department of Defense Policy of the Ministry of National Defense.

In his speech, Mateusz Sarosiek noted that the Polish side is conducting negotiations on establishing the production facilities for the American 3rd generation FGM-148 Javelin ATGMs in Poland.

The Ministry of Defense announced the purchase of the FGM-148F Javelin ATGM in September 2019. Already the following year, Poland ordered 60 launchers (CLU) together with 180 anti-tank guided missiles in the latest FGM-148F serial modification as part of the international military procurement procedure. The value of the deal was $54.5 million (201.57 million zlotys).

According to the US Defense Security Cooperation Agency (DSCA), Poland has also applied for Basic Trainers (BSTs), Missile Simulators (MSRs), and Battery Coolant Units (BCUs).

FGM-148F

Javelin ATGM is a portable anti-tank missile system of the third generation. Javelin is a fire-and-forget missile. It is in service with the Armed Forces of the United States and a number of other countries. The system is designed to destroy armored vehicles and air targets at low altitudes (helicopters, UAVs).

The FGM-148 Javelin ATGM missile has a thermal homing head, thus, the operator of the missile system does not need to monitor and adjust the flight of the missile after launch while it is approaching the target.

In May 2020, Raytheon and Lockheed Martin completed the creation of the first batch of the new FGM-148F Javelin anti-tank missile system and subsequently launched serial production.

The characteristic feature of this model is the presence of a multirole warhead. It allows dealing with heavy armored vehicles that are protected by dynamic protection, and with lightly armored targets or infantry. Therefore, with the new version of the missile system, the ATGM operator can effectively hit different types of targets without the need to change the type of ammunition.

Also, the FGM-148F model has a lighter launcher and a better target-tracking system. So far, no foreign country has ordered a new version of the Javelin ATGM.

It is worth noting that the Polish Armaments Agency conducts preliminary market consultations regarding the purchase of light anti-tank guided missiles. They may complement the heavier Spike LR ATGMs and the lighter FGM-148F Javelin. In this niche, the Polish industry offers its own solutions. These are the Ukrainian-Polish Pirat ATGM, with a range of 2,500 m, and the Moskit LR ATGM, with a range of 4,000 m.
