Lockheed Martin Australia, in cooperation with the Department of Defense, has launched a missile assembly plant in Port Wakefield, South Australia.
The new facility will produce GMLRS guided missiles and launcher containers. These munitions are used by HIMARS systems and have a range of over 70 km.
During the year, a group of Australian engineers underwent specialized training at Lockheed Martin’s plants in the United States.
Thanks to the knowledge gained, they, along with their American and Australian colleagues, prepared the company to assemble the first batches of GMLRS for the first time outside the United States.
Last year, Lockheed Martin Australia announced plans to produce up to 4,000 GMLRS missiles annually.
This was made possible by a $37.4 million contract.
The agreement is an important step towards developing domestic capability to produce precision-guided munitions and meet its own needs.
