The Russians were trying to jam the Starlink terminals through electronic warfare, but after a software update, Starlink was operating normally.

Breaking Defense reported about this, citing Elon Musk and Dave Trump, Director of the Pentagon’s EW procurement department.

Elon Max shared back on March 25 that Starlink resisted all hacking and jamming attempts in Ukraine. The Pentagon stated that the US military’s electronic warfare enterprise needs to take a page from SpaceX when it comes to responding to new threats.

The next day (after the “attack” on the company’s terminals was identified – ed.) Starlink added a single line of code. And suddenly, this obstacle ceased to be effective. From an EW technologist’s perspective, that is fantastic… I almost cried about how Starlink was able to upgrade when a threat emerged, we need to be able to have that ability. We have to be capable to change our electromagnetic posture, to be able to change very dynamically – that’s what we’re trying to do without losing capability along the way,” said the Director of Electronic Warfare at the Office of the Secretary of Defense at the C4ISRNET conference.

The US Department of Defense mentioned that it expected a “much stronger” EW presence from Russia. They also emphasize that this does not mean that all the efforts of the Russians are in vain.

The US military points out that the Pentagon must be an innovator in creating new EW equipment. In particular, this is stated by Tad Clark, Brigadier General of the US Army, the Air Force’s Director of Electromagnetic Spectrum Superiority, the newspaper writes.

He believes that it is not enough to simply update the versions of the existing systems. It should be about developing new ones that will withstand new threats and respond quickly to them.

He also added that the US military is gleaning a lot of information about Russia’s technological capabilities during the war in Ukraine.

“We’re learning a lot about what Russia has been investing their money in, the sophistication and the reliability of their equipment, and.. their ability to execute that mission in a synchronized fashion. It gives us some insight of where certain countries are, where we are, where we need to be, and where we want to be,” he said.

Clark also added that modern wars will increasingly rely on the effective operation of EW systems, especially at the beginning of the conflicts.

Previously, 5,000 Starlink terminals arrived in Ukraine in early April. They continue to be installed throughout Ukraine, especially in the occupied territories.

In addition, Mykhailo Fedorov, Minister of Digital Transformation, stated that the National Commission for State Regulation in the field of electronic communications has decided to allow the use of Starlink for all categories of users during the martial law.
