Russian Presidential Aide Nikolai Patrushev has stated that military action in the Baltic Sea is a possibility.
This was reported by The Moscow Times.
He made the statement amid discussions among NATO countries about measures to counter Russia’s so-called shadow fleet.
He claims that the concept of a shadow fleet is a “legal fiction” and that the detention of ships is a violation of international law.
In his comments, the Russian official said that the Russian Navy could potentially break through a naval blockade.
There were also hints of possible Russian actions against ships flying European flags.
Patrushev described the situation in the Baltic region as “difficult,” accusing NATO of forming an offensive group.
Separately, he acknowledged the high level of pressure on the Russian fleet in its maritime trade protection tasks.
Earlier, a number of European countries announced their intention to tighten control over ships involved in circumventing sanctions.
This primarily concerns tankers used to transport Russian energy resources outside official insurance and certification mechanisms.
Countering the shadow fleet is seen by NATO countries as one of the key tools for limiting Russia’s export revenues.
We will remind you that recently, the Estonian Foreign Ministry stated that it would strike Russia in the event of an attack on the Baltic states.
