In early June, the Czech company Excalibur Army will begin assembling CAESAR 8×8 self-propelled artillery systems.

This was announced in an official press release by KNDS (KMW+Nexter Defense Systems), the company that developed these self-propelled artillery systems.

It is reported that Excalibur Army’s production unit has repeatedly visited the KNDS plant in Roane for training to ensure that the project is ready to start on schedule.

Up to 40% of the self-propelled howitzer components will be manufactured in the Czech Republic, which will significantly strengthen the national defense industry base.

Several Czech companies are involved in the project: Excalibur Army is responsible for final assembly, Retia for communications equipment and fire control systems, and Tatra Defense Vehicles and Tatra Trucks for the cab and chassis.

In addition, cooperation with STV is continuing in the field of certification of Czech-made 155 mm ammunition.

As part of preparations for the CAESAR’s entry into service, the Czech Army will also receive an MRCT (Mixed Reality Crew Trainer) for crew training.

This system allows for full-scale training of crew interaction without the use of a real combat vehicle.

Czech contract for CAESAR

The Czech Republic ordered 52 CAESAR self-propelled artillery systems in September 2021, and in December 2022, it increased its order by another 10 units.

The total value of the contract is 10.3 billion Czech crowns (approximately $451 million). According to the plan, all self-propelled guns are to be delivered to the Czech Army by the end of 2026.

A key feature of this contract is the choice of an 8×8 chassis manufactured by the Czech company Tatra, instead of the standard 6×6. This decision will ensure a larger combat load, better cross-country mobility, and a higher level of crew protection.

In addition, all combat vehicles will be manufactured taking into account combat experience gained in Ukraine, which will increase their effectiveness on the modern battlefield.
