For the first time in its history, Paraguay will receive M108 self-propelled howitzers from Brazil.

The planned transfer was announced by Paraguayan Army General Manuel Rodriguez on Radio Nacional AM.

The Brazilian army intends to transfer six M108 self-propelled howitzers of 105 mm caliber.

These vehicles will be the first 105 mm self-propelled artillery systems in service with the Paraguayan army.

Earlier, Uruguay also received M108 self-propelled artillery systems from Brazil on a free basis.

The supply of M108 self-propelled artillery systems allowed Uruguay to form a new group of self-propelled artillery and begin to write off obsolete 105 mm M101 trailer howitzers.

The transfer of equipment is part of Brazil’s policy of strengthening international cooperation with partner countries.

In Brazil, the M108 howitzers were decommissioned in 2017-2018. To replace them, the army received 155-mm M109A5+ self-propelled artillery systems.

The American-made M108 self-propelled howitzer was developed in the early 1960s.

In the early 1970s, Brazil purchased 72 of these units from the US Army’s stockpile.

In the early 1980s, the Brazilian M108ARs were modernized – Motopeças replaced the American Detroit Diesel 8V71T engine.

In addition, this year Paraguay received a batch of A-29 Super Tucano light turboprop strike aircraft from Brazil for its Air Force.
