The Alliance will conduct a meeting of Chiefs of Defence on May 19.
This was announced by the press service of the Alliance.
One of the sessions will be dedicated to Russia’s war in Ukraine. The Chiefs of Defence from NATO Partner Nations (Finland, Sweden, and Ukraine) will be joining the discussions.
The main purpose of the meeting is to discuss the issues of “strategic importance for the Alliance”.
NATO Secretary-General Jens Stoltenberg will join the Chiefs of Defence for the first session to address the geostrategic context and preparations for the Madrid Summit in June.
Sweden and Finland are speculated to apply to join the North Atlantic Alliance during the summit in Madrid. Both countries confirmed this intention, but have not yet made a final decision.
Countries could be relinquishing their neutral status to confront Russia along with other NATO members.
It is also known that the Baltic states and Poland will demand a change in NATO’s strategic concept to reflect Russia’s threats on the Alliance’s eastern borders. They will also insist on putting in a decision to strengthen NATO’s eastern flanks.
The summit in Madrid will take place from June 29-30, 2022.
