NATO plans to appeal to its allies in European countries and Canada to increase their stocks of weapons and military equipment by about 30% in the coming years.

A senior NATO official informed Bloomberg about this.

New targets for the military capabilities of NATO member countries are currently being discussed, which will replace those set before Russia’s invasion of Ukraine.

The new targets are expected to be finalized by early June, when NATO defense ministers convene in Brussels.

Sources indicate that reaching these new goals will require substantial financial investments from the majority of European allies and Canada.

In this way, NATO is responding to the threat from Russia, as well as to US President Donald Trump’s desire to shift more of the defense burden from the US to the rest of the Alliance.

The new goals will require an increase in military equipment by about 30% in all sectors. However, in some categories, the increase may be higher or lower.

A senior NATO official noted that new goals, which would take five to 15 years to implement, would make European and Canadian forces within NATO much stronger and less dependent on the United States.

It is worth noting that U.S. President Donald Trump repeatedly accused NATO members of taking advantage of Washington by spending insufficient funds on defense.

He stated that the U.S. would step back from its traditional role as the guarantor of security in Europe and demanded that allies spend 5%. However, this goal is considered unrealistic by many.

Flags of Canada and the European Union

Canada is negotiating with the European Union to join their new project aimed at expanding the military-industrial complex and reducing dependence on the United States. This was reported by sources from The New York Times.

Joining the project is expected to open new markets for Canadian manufacturers and strengthen defense cooperation with Europe amid the cooling of relations with the U.S. following Donald Trump’s rise to power.
