The minesweeper Lt. Dimitrie Nicolescu (DM-29) of the Romanian Navy detonated a drifting mine in an attempt to defuse it in the Black Sea.
The Romanian media reported about this with reference to the country’s defense department.
The ship’s crew were aware of the mine drifting about 25 nautical miles northeast from the Romanian port of Constanta.
On board the minesweeper there was a group of divers and a boat specializing in research and gathering information on objects dangerous to navigation.
However, due to adverse weather conditions and darkness, Lt. Dimitrie Nicolescu (DM-29) encountered a sea mine and the latter exploded. The Romanian Navy reported about this.
As a result, a small hole formed on the waterline border of the aft part of the ship.
“There are no casualties or injuries as a result of the explosion, the 75 servicemen of the ship are not in danger, the buoyancy of the ship is not impaired, and there is no serious damage on board,” the Romanian Ministry of Defense said.
Immediately after the incident, the ship’s crew closed the hole and limited the access of water to the aft compartment.
It is worth mentioning that on July 28, this year, the small hydrographic vessel Shlyahovyk, belonging to the state institution “Derzhhydrografia”, blew up in the mouth of Bystre, which connects the Danube with the Black Sea.
The vessel received a hole in the bow below the waterline.
After the explosion, the vessel stopped at the entrance to the mouth of Bystre from the Black Sea. The participants of the rescue operation arrived promptly.
In June, in Odesa Region, the Ukrainian servicemen destroyed a drifting sea mine with a machine gun.
