Despite its promises, Poland has not yet provided funds for the Czech Republic’s initiative to purchase artillery shells around the world for Ukraine.
The Polish Gazeta Wyborcza reported on this.
The article says that Poland is allegedly the only country that has promised to support the Czech initiative but has not yet provided any funding for it.
According to journalists, as of August, 18 countries have joined the Czech Republic’s initiative to search for and purchase ammunition for the Ukrainian Defense Forces outside the European Union.
They also emphasized that Germany had provided the most funds. It also did so in the shortest possible time.
At the same time, the publication writes, Poland has not yet provided any funds, although it promised to do so.
It is worth noting that back in March, Polish Foreign Minister Radosław Sikorski said that Poland would double its contribution to the Czech initiative to purchase artillery shells for Ukraine.
However, speaking to journalists at a press conference in Riga at the time, Sikorski refused to disclose the exact amount of funding.
The Polish newspaper notes that, barring anything unforeseen, in September the Czech Republic will be able to hand over to Ukraine about 100,000 shells purchased under its initiative, approaching the goal of finding at least half a million large-caliber artillery shells for Ukraine by the end of the year.
The Czech initiative came about after it became clear that the EU could not fulfill its promise to Kyiv to deliver one million rounds of ammunition on time.
The Czech government offered to buy shells for the Ukrainian Defense Forces outside the European Union.
In August, Defense Minister Jana Černochová said that the Czech Republic woyld use the proceeds of Russian assets frozen in the EU as part of its initiative to purchase ammunition for Ukraine.
