Luxembourg will join the Drone Coalition for Ukraine, jointly led by Latvia and the United Kingdom.
To this end, on Wednesday, October 2, Defense Minister Yuriko Backes signed a declaration in Riga.
The Directorate of Defence of Luxembourg reported that the government will allocate about €3 million to the coalition’s needs.
“Luxembourg’s accession to the drone coalition would make a significant contribution to the design and development of new drone technologies to keep Ukraine one step ahead of the aggressor. We will also invite other allies to actively participate in the drone coalition to increase the volume of supplies to Ukraine,” Latvian Defense Minister Andris Sprūds shared.
It is noted that, according to the Drone Coalition’s Memorandum of Understanding, the admission of new countries must be approved by existing coalition members.
With Luxembourg joining the drone coalition for Ukraine, it will include 17 countries.
The Ministry of Defense of Latvia pointed out that coalition members have already provided significant support to Ukraine through the supply of drones.
Since the coalition was founded this February, Latvia has supplied Ukraine with 3,000 combat drones of various types and characteristics.
Also, this year, Latvia allocated €20 million for the coalition’s goals and provided testing opportunities for drone manufacturers and the military to continuously improve them.
Currently, the UK, Australia, the Czech Republic, Denmark, France, Estonia, Italy, New Zealand, Canada, Lithuania, the Netherlands, Poland, Ukraine, Germany, and Sweden, along with Latvia, are participating in the Drone Coalition.
In May this year, it was reported that Luxembourg ordered one Caesar 155mm self-propelled howitzer for the Ukrainian military.
For a small European country with a population of 650,000 people, such a donation is a significant investment in Ukraine’s defense capabilities. Since the beginning of the Russian invasion in 2022, Luxembourg has donated over a hundred armored vehicles and M113 tracked armored personnel carriers, as well as a large number of infantry weapons and ammunition.
