Lithuanian border guards will use the helicopter to monitor transit trains traveling to and from Kaliningrad.
According to a report by LRT, Lithuania has acquired an Airbus H145 helicopter with funding provided by the European Commission to enhance the security of transit routes from the Russian enclave.
As part of this program, Lithuania received €25 million, of which 11 million were spent on the helicopter, and the remaining funds were used to purchase other vehicles and equipment.
In addition, Lithuania has purchased two more helicopters of this type, but they are intended for border monitoring. Two H145 helicopters have already arrived in the country, and the third is expected in July.
The new helicopters are equipped with video surveillance systems, cargo suspension equipment, search and rescue tools, as well as fire-fighting and medical systems.
On March 23, it was reported that the Lithuanian Ministry of Defense was considering the possibility of strengthening the border with Russia and Belarus by mining it.
Mining will become an additional element of border protection within the concept of counter-mobility, which will provide the ability to ensure longer-lasting deterrence of a potential enemy.
As noted by the Lithuanian Minister of Defense, both anti-personnel and anti-tank mines will be used as part of this strategy, taking into account Poland’s experience in creating the northeastern flanking barrier.
In addition, Lithuania is discussing the possibility of jointly strengthening borders with other countries, ranging from Finland to Poland.
The plan includes the establishment of a defensive line with numerous fortifications, bunkers, strongholds, and corresponding bases.
Militarnyi previously reported that Lithuania had officially withdrawn from the international convention that prohibited the purchase, use, and production of cluster munitions.
