Textron Aviation Defense and Italy’s Leonardo have introduced a carrier-capable version of the Beechcraft M-346 jet trainer, designated the M-346N, for the U.S. Navy.
The announcement was reported by media.txtav.
The aircraft was developed jointly with Leonardo and tailored to meet the requirements of the upcoming Undergraduate Jet Training System (UJTS) program, which aims to replace the aging T-45 Goshawk trainer.
The M-346N is a two-seat jet with a tandem cockpit, digital fly-by-wire flight controls, and modern avionics.
It is powered by two Honeywell F124-GA-200 engines, offering speeds above 1,092 km/h and a service ceiling of 13.7 km.
The cockpit features multi-function displays, a hands-on-throttle-and-stick (HOTAS) interface, a helmet-mounted display system, and an integrated Auto-GCAS ground collision avoidance system.
The platform is intended to train cadets for next-generation fighter aircraft.
Textron is also offering a comprehensive pilot training system that includes simulators, virtual trainers, mission planning and debriefing tools, and adaptive software with artificial intelligence elements.
This system has already been tested in the International Flight Training School (IFTS), a joint initiative with the Italian Air Force. Since 2021, M-346 aircraft have been used at IFTS to train pilots from the UK, Germany, Japan, and other countries.
Textron Aviation Defense President Travis Tyler said the M-346N combines a proven platform with modern technology and is ready for operational deployment.
According to preliminary information, the U.S. Navy plans to procure at least 145 aircraft under the new program, with a competitive selection process expected in the coming years. A final decision is anticipated by 2027.
Militarnyi previously reported that Colombia’s military leadership has shown interest in acquiring Leonardo’s M-346FA light combat aircraft.
