Latvia is preparing a detailed plan for the rapid destruction of roads and railways near its eastern border in the event of an attack by Russia.
This was announced by Latvian Defense Minister Andris Spruds in an interview with LSM.
The Military Council and the Ministry of Transport have already submitted summary information on this issue to the government.
“If the military threat increases, we do not rule out the dismantling of roads and railways. No military train of the occupiers will pass through Latvian territory,” the minister said.
Latvian President Edgars Rinkēvičs noted yesterday that the country is currently considering comprehensive measures to ensure the security of its eastern border.
According to him, this concerns not only railway tracks, but also roads and measures against mobility taken by the Ministry of Defense.
“The main task is to implement the measures that have already been defined, and with regard to the tracks, to prepare a model of action that will allow this problem to be solved in the event of a crisis…,” added the country’s president.
Several Latvian ministries and security agencies have been tasked with preparing a report by the end of 2025 on the impact of dismantling the railways on the border with Russia.
According to Latvian and foreign military analysts, the existence of a railway connection with Russia poses a major risk to the security of the Baltic country.
Representatives of the Latvian armed forces have made it clear that the railway tracks on the Russian border must be dismantled — the sooner, the better.
In December 2025, Latvia also completed the construction of a 280-kilometer fence along the border with Russia, which is an important part of the country’s external security infrastructure.
The construction of such a long fence has become one of the country’s largest infrastructure projects in the field of national security.
