Latvia has transferred vehicles confiscated from drunk drivers to Ukraine, with a total value of €2.25 million.

This was announced by the Latvian State Revenue Service (VID).

In 2023, the Latvian Parliament—Seimas—adopted urgent amendments to the Law on Support of Ukrainian Civilians.

These amendments allow for the transfer of cars that have been owned by the Latvian state to Ukraine.

These include vehicles that were confiscated from drivers who drove while intoxicated.
Since the aforementioned amendments to the law came into force, the government has made several decisions to transfer confiscated cars to Ukraine.

According to VID, a total of 612 cars worth a preliminary value of €2.25 million have been transferred to Ukraine.

Some of the vehicles will be transferred to the Ministry of Defense of Ukraine, including military units.

The owners do not receive compensation, making their decision to drive drunk extremely expensive.

This also encourages citizens of other countries to call on their governments to adopt similar solutions.

In October, Latvian citizens purchased and delivered drones to the soldiers of the Defence Intelligence of Ukraine.

At that time, the charity fundraising was initiated by Janis Slydins, Major of the Armed Forces of Latvia, a public figure and volunteer. He brought and handed over the drones to the Ukrainian reconnaissance men.
