Latvia officially announced the completion of 145 km of fence on the border with Belarus.
LSM reported on this.
The main work has now been completed by the state-owned enterprise Valsts nekustamie īpašumi.
The second stage will be the preparation of the necessary infrastructure, including patrol paths, pedestrian bridges and other solutions needed to protect the border, which will continue along the entire 173 kilometers of the border.
As noted by the Minister of Internal Affairs, Rihards Kozlovskis, the fence was built professionally and on schedule.
Currently, Valsts nekustamie īpašumi is also building additional infrastructure for border guards near the Daugava River and in the area around Lake Rychy, where the border fence is not being built.
The Latvian government noted that there was no border fence on the 16.7-kilometer section near the Daugava, where a dredging road and infrastructure around Lake Rychy were being built.
According to the plan, the company should complete its work by the summer of 2025.
The total cost of construction of the Latvian-Belarusian border fence and infrastructure, as well as related services and works, is €125.35 million, including €3.6 million provided by the European Union.
As previously reported, constructing a 112-kilometer fence on the Belarusian border was completed in 2023.
Also, last year, a 30-meter tunnel was put into operation, which significantly facilitates border control in the area where the border crosses the railway line.
The plan to strengthen the eastern border and counter enemy troop mobility is part of the Baltic Defensive Line initiative, which covers the entire length of the Latvian border with Russia and Belarus.
