Japanese shipbuilding company Japan Marine United (JMU) has delivered the new JS Nomi minesweeper to the Japan Maritime Self-Defense Force (JMSDF), as reported by the official JMSDF website.

The official flag-raising ceremony took place at the shipyard in Yokohama, where the minesweeper JS Nomi and three other vessels of the same class are being constructed.

The minesweeper was ordered within the 2021 budget and was laid down at the JMU shipyard on February 22, 2021.

The ship was launched on October 24, 2023, with work continuing on its completion, installation of necessary systems, and sea trials.

The name JS Nomi is derived from Nomi Island and marks the first instance of this name being used in the history of the Japan Maritime Self-Defense Force and the second in the history of the Japanese fleet. In 1943, the name was assigned to the Nomi-class escort ship Mikura.

The JS Nomi has now been integrated into the 3rd Minesweeper Group of the Mine Countermeasures Command at Kure Naval Base, complementing the existing JS Etajima minesweeper.

In addition, the JMSDF has received funding to purchase two more minesweepers from Japan Marine United (JMU), which have been assigned the registration numbers 04MSO and 06MSO.

As of 2025, the Japan Maritime Self-Defense Force operates a fleet of 22 minesweepers, focused under the command of the Mine Countermeasures Command. These minesweepers are responsible for ensuring the safety of sea routes and contributing to regional stability.

Militarnyi previously reported that the JMSDF also held an induction ceremony for the 4th Taigei-class submarine into the fleet.

The flag-raising ceremony for the JS Raigei took place at the Kawasaki Heavy Industries shipyard in Kobe before the submarine set sail for its home base in Kure to join the 1st Group of the 1st Submarine Flotilla.
