Israel has unveiled Ice Breaker — a new 5th generation air-launched long-range missile.
Defense concern Rafael Advanced Defense Systems announced the new weapon.
The missile can be carried by various types of combat aircraft. The new missile is expected to provide efficient and pinpoint damage to the various ground and surface targets at a distance of up to 300 km away.
The unveiling of the new system followed the Sea Breaker anti-ship missile system’s presentation that happened last year. These two systems are part of a family of missiles that can be launched from air, naval and land platforms.
“The Ice Breaker offers the full scope of commonality incorporating not only the land and naval platform application, but now it can be operated from air bases,” the statement said.
The Ice Breaker missile can be equipped with a 250-pound penetrating, blast, and fragmentation warhead.
Compatible with various aerial platforms and stand-off capabilities, it can be launched from fighter jets, light aircraft and helicopters. The Ice Breaker missile is fully operational in all weather conditions.
The Ice Breaker missile can fly at low altitudes at high subsonic speeds above the ground even with difficult terrain.
The new missile flies on a predetermined route and can adjust its course due to real-time information on tactical updates.
Also, the missile system has a mid-flight abort capability and battle damage assessment capabilities for operators to see the target after firing the missile.
As previously reported, in February, Israel completed the first series of combat firing with the C-Dome air and missile defense system mounted on board Sa’ar-6 class corvettes.
C-Dome is a naval version of the Iron Dome air defense systems, which are part of Israel’s multi-level missile defense system.
