Israel has ordered a significant number of additional interceptors for the Arrow missile defense system.
This was reported by the country’s Ministry of Defense.
The contract for the large-scale order was signed after repelling recent Iranian ballistic missile attacks.
It will likely involve the purchase of new interceptor missiles for the most modern version of the Arrow 3 system, which performed well during the last escalation between Israel and Iran.
The Defense Ministry of Israel said that this contract will significantly speed up the mass production of interceptors.
The exact number of missiles ordered is not disclosed, as well as the cost of this purchase. It is only noted that it is a “significant number”.
In June, The Wall Street Journal reported, citing an anonymous US official, that Israel was facing a serious shortage of missiles for the Arrow missile defense system after repelling Iranian massive missile attacks.
Arrow 3 is designed to provide missile defense by intercepting ballistic missiles outside the atmosphere by a direct hit-to-kill method. The system is considered one of the best in the world. It was developed in cooperation with the U.S. Missile Defense Agency (MDA).
Israel Aerospace Industries (IAI) is the main contractor for the development of the system. The project also involves American and other Israeli defense companies.
According to the manufacturer, the Arrow 3 system is capable of intercepting ballistic missiles fired from a distance of up to 2,400 kilometers.
Germany has ordered such systems. According to the plan, the country should receive the first Arrow 3 missile defense battery by the end of 2025.
A more advanced Arrow 4 missile defense system is currently being developed.
