The German government has announced a new large-scale military aid package for Ukraine.
This is stated on the website of the Ministry of Defense of Germany.
“Germany will continue to support Ukraine with what it needs most – air defense, ammunition, and tanks. With this new ‘winter package’, we are further enhancing the operational readiness of the Ukrainian armed forces in the coming months,” said Defense Minister Boris Pistorius.
He added that Germany is providing additional air defense equipment, namely the PATRIOT, IRIS-T, and Gepard systems, to protect Ukraine’s critical infrastructure.
The PATRIOT system will come from the Bundeswehr’s depots, in addition to a fire control station and a radar station, and will include eight launchers and possibly over 60 missiles.
The training of the Ukrainian crews will begin within the next few weeks.
In October, Germany will hand over to Ukraine one IRIS-T SLM and one IRIS-T SLS air defense system along with missiles.
Ukraine will also receive 10 Leopard 1A5 main battle tanks and three Gepard anti-aircraft guns.
This air defense assistance package is reportedly worth about one billion euros.
In addition, Pistorius announced an assistance package for the Ukrainian Special Operations Forces.
“We are also making Ukraine’s Special Operations Forces even more capable with a broad aid package of vehicles, weapons, and personal equipment worth more than €20 million,” he added.
Militarnyi reported on October 6 that Germany planned to provide Ukraine with additional air defense systems.
In addition, on October 4, it was reported that Germany planned to strengthen Ukraine with additional Gepard and IRIS-T air defense systems.
